ABOUT YAG

Yaw Afrim Gyebi, a self-taught Documentary and Political Photographer, Storyteller, Activist, and Photojournalist, hails from the lively city of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. Currently enrolled in a B. A Communication Studies program with a Journalism Option at the University of Media, Arts & Communications (UniMAC), previously known as the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ).

In the vibrant atmosphere of Kumasi, Yaw discovered his inherent talent for capturing impactful stories through his camera lens. His transformative experience at UniMAC has been instrumental in shaping his understanding of the influential nature of visual storytelling, emphasizing its power to draw attention to crucial social issues. As a self-taught photographer, He embraces his role as a visual communicator, skillfully documenting stories that resonate with the human experience. His work transcends mere images, delving into the heart of various narratives and shedding light on often-overlooked stories. His commitment to activism through photography is evident in his ability to capture moments that inspire change and provoke thought. His lens serves as a powerful tool for advocacy, addressing social, cultural, and environmental issues within and beyond his community.

Driven by an unwavering commitment to humanity, His central mission revolves around amplifying the voices of marginalized individuals and catalyzing transformative change through the compelling medium of photography.

Growing up in an underserved community, he developed a profound passion for capturing moments that have the potential to ignite positive transformations in people's lives and their surroundings. His overarching purpose is to cultivate a profound sense of value, foster trust, and leave an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of those who engage with his work. Every click of his camera's shutter is not just an act of capturing emotions but embodies his voice and actions, reflecting his belief in photography's capacity to evoke profound and lasting transformation.

Despite his ongoing academic journey at UniMAC, Yaw's extraordinary work has earned recognition from esteemed organizations globally. His works have been published and featured in exhibitions, reports, magazines, and news in countries such as Switzerland, Germany, New York, China, and Nigeria, leading to a series of commissioned projects.

As a professional member of renowned photography organizations like Photographers Without Borders and the African Photojournalism Database (APJD), a collaborative venture between World Press Photo and Everyday Africa, Yaw showcases his versatile expertise spanning social documentary photography, photojournalism, and political photography. His unwavering focus remains on capturing inspirational and authentic African experiences.

Additionally, Yaw was selected as one of 20 Ghanaian/Nigerian photographers to participate in a prestigious 2-day workshop facilitated by Bayo Omoboriowo, a distinguished Nigerian photojournalist and documentary photographer. The workshop was organized by the Dikan Center with the support of the U.S. Embassy in Ghana.
